Training sessions
Since its launch in 2016, over 400 institutions worldwide have submitted their carbon footprints using the Climate Impact Check tool developed by Health Care Without Harm.
Health Care Without Harm has supported training events and created communities of practice to encourage adoption and use of the tool for climate resilient, low carbon, and sustainable healthcare in real-life scenarios. This type of event (in Spanish called “Huellatón”) started in Latin America and helped many institutions to estimate their GHG emission using the Climate Impact Checkup tool.

HCWH Europe regularly organises meetings for its GGHH members to encourage networking and provide updates on our work and the latest tools and resources available. In 2021, we organised a member meeting to launch Climate Impact Checkup and introduce members to all its features. This was followed by a refresher event at the end of 2022 - introducing new members to all the tools available on GGHH Connect, including Climate Impact Checkup.
In collaboration with Departament de Salut Xàtiva Ontiynent (Spain), HCWH Europe has established a mentoring programme to support 11 hospitals in the Valencia region (Spain) to integrate climate action into their healthcare planning and develop expertise in carbon management. This project utilised a standard methodology for healthcare carbon management, developed as part of the Low-carbon healtcare in the Mediterranean region project. In depth trainings were carried out on Climate Impact Checkup to support the hospitals in calculating their healthcare emissions.
Towards the end of May 2022, Health Care Without Harm Southeast Asia organized the first ever Climate Impact Checkup Tool Training of Trainers with the aim of building capacities of Global Green and Healthy Hospital (GGHH) members and select ministries of health in the region, including those who have committed to the COP26 Health Programme, to establish their baseline carbon emissions, set target reductions and develop action plans for mitigation.
It was attended by GGHH members and representatives of ministries of health from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Lao.
In February 2022, the Health System of the State of Guanajuato, in Mexico, joined the Global Green and Healthy Hospital network. By doing so, more than 40 hospitals and health centers received instant membership and access to the tools and resources, including the Climate Checkup Impact Tool. As part of the process, the institutions participated in a Huellatón (Footprint Cafe).
In December 2022, Health Care Without Harm Latin America, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Disaster Risk Management and National Defense in Health (DIGERD) of the Ministry of Health of Peru, organized a workshop called "Carbon Footprint Estimation in Health Institutions" in Lima.
The "Huellatón" was offered in two modalities: face-to-face and virtual. On December 5, the face-to-face modality was carried out with 10 health establishments in the Lima region. On December 6, the virtual modality was conducted with 10 establishments from the regions of Cajamarca (3), Piura (3), Tacna (3), and San Martín (1).
In May 2023, Health Care Without Harm carried out a training event for 11 health institutions in Nepal supported by the World Health Organization in collaboration with the Department of Health Services of the Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal. This exercise is part of Nepal’s commitment to produce a national plan to decarbonize its health system.
You can’t manage what you don’t measure. With that in mind, HCWH Europe organised two workshops at CleanMed Europe in June 2023, to support healthcare facilities to calculate and track their greenhouse gas emissions using Climate Impact Checkup.
In a project that spanned several days throughout June 2023, Health Care Without Harm Latin America successfully conducted a series of "huellatones" organized within the framework of the project to estimate the carbon footprint of the Colombian healthcare system. This project is being carried out jointly with Colombia's Ministry of Health and Social Protection. It comprised six in-person events (Cali, June 5th and 6th; Bogotá, June 8th and 9th; Medellín, June 13th; Cartagena, June 15th) and five virtual events (June 20th, 22nd, 23rd, 27th, and 28th).
