Health Care Climate Challenge: A decade of climate leadership

Update April 23, 2025

Since its inception in 2015, the Climate Challenge has played a vital role in mobilizing health care institutions worldwide to take impactful climate action.

Over the past ten years, over 450 GGHH members participating in the Health Care Climate Challenge have demonstrated remarkable leadership in reducing emissions, enhancing resilience, and implementing climate-smart health care solutions. Hospitals and health systems have risen to the challenge and tackled waste reduction, energy consumption, and conservation of vital resources to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and build resilient, sustainable systems that support both planetary and public health.

This milestone highlights the remarkable contributions of health care institutions worldwide—their achievements, resilience in the face of challenges, and commitment to meaningful change. It’s also a moment to thank everyone who has been part of this journey and inspire others to join us in building a healthier, more sustainable future.
