Celebrating progress: Over 75 health care institutions leading the Race to Zero!

Update April 08, 2025

Together, they committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by an equivalent of 1.4 million gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year.

As we step into a new year of climate action, we are thrilled to celebrate a major milestone—over 75 health care institutions worldwide have successfully met their Race to Zero reporting requirements! This achievement reflects the growing commitment of hospitals and health systems to reducing emissions and building a sustainable, climate-resilient future.

These institutions are committed to reducing their emissions by over 6 million tons of CO2 equivalents, comparable to*:

  • 1.4 million gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year
  • More than 2,555 million liters (675 million gallons) of gasoline consumed
  • Almost 100 million tree seedlings grown for 10 years

*Calculated using the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator

With members around the world, the Race to Zero health care community continues to expand and deepen its impact. Engagement and participation are stronger than ever, with institutions sharing their progress, challenges, and solutions, inspiring others to take bold steps toward decarbonization.

Last year, we welcomed over 15 new health care institutions into Race to Zero, further strengthening the movement. We are honored to work alongside these care organizations that have stepped forward to set ambitious targets, develop action plans, and contribute to transforming the health sector worldwide.

Looking ahead: 2025 and beyond

The urgency of the climate crisis demands continued and immediate action. This year presents new opportunities to lead, innovate, and accelerate progress. Race to Zero health care members will have access to expanded resources, knowledge-sharing platforms, and opportunities to collaborate, ensuring their progress and success carry on.

“Every step these institutions take moves us closer to a healthier, more resilient future. Their leadership is turning ambition into action—cutting emissions, safeguarding communities, and inspiring others around the world. They prove that climate action in health care isn’t just possible—it’s happening,” says Lucila Citcioglu, Climate Initiatives Specialist, Health Care Without Harm.
